BASICS
Before you go.
- Language
- Sinhala and Tamil
- Both are official languages, and English is widely used as a link language, especially in Colombo and in tourism.
- Currency
- Sri Lankan rupee (Rs, LKR)
- Cash is still widely used, especially outside the cities. Cards work in larger hotels, shops and restaurants.
- Time zone
- Sri Lanka time, UTC+5:30
- One time zone, no daylight saving time.
- Power
- Type D, G and M plugs, 230 V
- Sockets vary between buildings, so a universal adapter helps.
- Getting online
- eSIM, SIM or Wi-Fi
- Easy to set up at the airport. Coverage is good along the coast and in towns, and patchier in the hills.
- Emergency
- 119 police · 110 fire · 1990 ambulance
- 1990 is the free Suwa Seriya ambulance service.
GETTING AROUND
Easy to move, once you know how.
Trains
Trains run along the coast and up into the hill country. They're slow and scenic, and popular routes book up early.
Buses
Public and private buses reach almost every town, often frequently and at a lively pace.
Tuk-tuks and ride-hailing
Tuk-tuks are everywhere, and ride-hailing apps work in Colombo and other larger towns.
Hiring a driver
For longer trips, many people hire a car with a driver rather than driving themselves.

GOOD TO KNOW
Small things that help.
Visiting temples
Dress respectfully at temples and follow local or posted guidance when entering sacred areas.
Two monsoons
The southwest and northeast monsoons arrive at different times, so the best coast depends on the season.
Regions differ
The Sinhala south, the Tamil north and the hill country differ in language, food and daily life.
Cash for small things
Small notes help for tuk-tuks, buses and street food.
Tipping
Many restaurants add a service charge. A small tip for drivers and guides is common.
